When the excess moisture condenses into a liquid water- forming dew, mist or condensation on surfaces .

Moisture Meter Shows Damp

MIS-DIAGNOSING RISING DAMP As you can see from the moisture meter it has the Wall down as Damp, a lot of people would then think it was Rising Damp from the moisture reading, but after looking at the Thermal camera image on the next photo you will see that it is not Damp it is 100% dry.

A lot of Damp people will then tell the Client that the Plaster needs taking off a metre up, a DPC Chemical injection system would then be used, then the wall would be re-plastered which could cost £1000s, the same problem will rise again in the future, then costing not only more money but more time as well.

Thermal Camera Shows No Damp

THERMAL CAMERA PICKS UP THAT THE WALL IS DRY, As you can see from the Moisture Meter picture Rising Damp can easily be mis-diagnosed, costing the client £1000s, the wall is next to a Chimney, so those high meter readings are caused not by Rising Damp but from Efflorence Salts coming through the brickwork into the Gypsum Plaster, to remedy this we would use a system where you do not have to even take the contaminated Plaster off, so not only costing alot less than the Rising Damp diagnosis but will also fix the long term problem where the Efflorence Salts comes through the Plaster.

If we do think that Rising Damp is the problem then we double check the findings to make sure its Rising Damp by checking the moisture content with a Calcium Carbide ( speedy ) Test, this measures the moisture content in the building material, this involves drilling a small hole into the wall and we then check the dust sample with a Calcium Carbide powder, which we put into a sealed vessel and shake it to create a chemical reaction that produces acetylene gas, we then get the measurement which shows if there is any moisture in the content of the wall confirming if the wall has Rising Damp or not.
